At the GHSA state championships in Carrollton last week, Vassey not only led his team to the Class AAA cham-pionship, but he was able to win the individual state title. He finished in a time of 15:35, which was a full 12 seconds ahead of his next closest competitor – Ty McCormack of North Hall.

Overall, the team finished eighth with 229 total points. The War Eagles next best finishers were Matthew Greer who finished in 17:41 to place 43rd and Steven Simpson, who finished in 56th with a time of 17:53.

The meet victory was Vassey’s third in the team’s last three invitationals. At the Region 4-AAA meet, Vassey won in a time of 16:50, while he took the Last Chance Invitational held at Carrollton in a time of 16:15. The region meet was held in Spalding on a much slower course, and the next closest runner finished nearly 30 seconds behind him.

On November 28, the competition will be much stiffer, as he will likely run in the Foot Locker South Regional race being held at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C.
